Inside the citadel
Machu Picchu guided tour: what the guide covers, and for how long
Every trip on this site includes the same thing: a Machu Picchu guided tour inside the citadel. What changes is how you arrive, how long the guide stays with you and what happens after. This page lines up all nine, with the time inside where the listing gives it, the circuit you can expect and what each price covers. Hikes start at $585 per person.

Quick answer
The short answer. Expect about two hours with your guide. The day tours from Cusco give two to two and a half hours; the $1,290 four-day route gives three. If you want time on your own after the Machu Picchu guided tour, the $585 two-day hike says so plainly: a two-hour walk with the guide, then time to explore by yourself. On one day tour, you leave the citadel when the guide does.

Time inside
How long the guide stays with you
Two hours is the usual length; three is the longest on this site.
Five of the nine listings put a number on the guided part. Two of the day tours by train give about two hours; one of them words it plainly: «Guided tour of Machu Picchu (approximately 2 hours)». The $308 day tour lists 2.5 hours of guided visit and sightseeing. The $585 two-day hike gives a 2-hour guided walking tour, and the $1,290 four-day route the longest Machu Picchu guided tour here, three hours on the final day.
The other four describe the visit without a clock. Our top pick, the $840 four-day Inca Trail, walks the Circuit 1 upper path after the Sun Gate and then runs a guided Circuit 3 tour. The $630 two-day hike calls its visit a «guided in-depth tour», and the $679 hike enters at the time on your ticket. The $370 Sacred Valley trip explores the site with a guide on day two.
Whichever you book, the Machu Picchu guided tour is the core of the day, so know the time before you choose.
What the guide covers
What you hear inside, in the listings’ own words
Each listing describes its Machu Picchu guided tour in a line or two, in its own words.
- Temples, terraces and the sky, $679
«Temples, terraces, and astronomical structures, while your guide unveils the history and engineering marvels of the Inca civilization.»
- History, architecture, sacred sites, $1,290
A three-hour visit, «learning about its fascinating history, architecture, and sacred sites».
- Terraces, stairways, ceremonial buildings, $370
«Admire incredible terraces, stairways, and ceremonial structures as you learn about its fascinating history.»
- Symbolism and engineering, $308
You meet the guide at the gates; the visit covers «the engineering of the terraces» and «the legacy, symbolism, and architectural genius» of the site.
- The main sites, $320
After you show tickets and ID at the entrance, the guide takes you to «the main sites of the city» for about two hours.
- History and details, $630
An in-depth tour «learning about history, secrets, and fascinating details», after a bus up as the sun rises.
The route
Circuits: which part of the citadel you walk
Your circuit is set by availability, not by the tour.
Inside, visitors follow set circuits, and the listings are frank that yours depends on availability. On a Machu Picchu guided tour ruins and terraces are shown along whichever circuit your ticket names, so read this line on the listing before you pay.
The $349 day tour and the $370 Sacred Valley trip give priority to Circuit 2, then Circuit 3 or 5, and finally Circuit 1. The $308 day tour assigns Circuit 2 or 3. The $320 day tour offers Circuit 1, 2 or 3 and suggests booking three to four months ahead if you want Circuit 2; you can ask which is open before you book. Our top pick names both: the Circuit 1 upper path for photos, then a guided Circuit 3 tour.
In the citadel
Stone, rock and terraces up close
What a slow walk with a guide puts in front of you.
Fitted stone
A curved tower of tightly fitted blocks with one small window, a stone staircase and a wooden handrail in front, and a green peak behind it.
Rock and wall
Two great tilted rocks rise out of the ground and run straight into walls of fitted stone, with a dark opening at their base.
On the terraces
Four llamas, cream and brown, stand in a line along the top of a rough stone wall against a grey-blue sky.
After the guide
Time on your own, and the one rule on re-entry
One hike gives you time alone after the guide; one day tour does not.
No listing here is a Machu Picchu self guided tour: all nine come with a live guide. What differs is whether you stay on afterwards. The $585 two-day hike says that after the guided walk you can «explore the area by yourself», and then take a bus or walk back down to Aguas Calientes.
The $349 day tour says the opposite for its group: visitors «can only stay in the citadel during the guided tour», and «you will not be able to re-enter the citadel». Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain are not part of any price; three hikes mention them as an option only with a separate ticket booked ahead, three to six months ahead by one listing’s count.
Elias from Norway, on the $349 day: «Our guide was fantastic as well with sharing history in an engaging manner and helping with photos.»

Getting to the gate
Morning bus or a day from Cusco
Hikers are at the gate early; day tours arrive after a long ride.
Every guided tour to Machu Picchu on this site has the bus between Aguas Calientes and the citadel in its programme, 25 to 30 minutes on a winding road, and none of the listings says whether the bus fare is in the price. The hikes reach the gate early. The $585 hike catches one of the first buses, the $630 hike boards as the sun rises, and our top pick walks in through the Sun Gate before dawn.
The day tours pick you up in Cusco between 4:00 and 8:00 AM, then drive to Ollantaytambo for the train. Monica from the United States, on the $308 day: «This tour made it so easy to visit Machu Picchu and learn about Incan history.»
Before you book
Five things to check on the listing
Five minutes on the listing saves a surprise.
- Your passport
Four listings ask for passport details at booking, and two ask you to carry it on the day.
- The circuit
It depends on availability. Ask the operator which is open if a circuit matters to you.

One day tour does not allow re-entry. If you want to stay longer, the $585 hike builds in time on your own.
- Extra summits
Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain need a separate ticket, booked well ahead.
- Cancellation
Seven of the nine listings are non-refundable, including our top pick. Free cancellation shows on the $679 two-day hike and the $1,290 four-day route.

Machu Picchu guided tour: questions, answered
How long do you get inside Machu Picchu on a day tour?
About two hours with the guide on the $349 and $320 day tours, and 2.5 hours on the $308 day. On the $349 tour you stay only during the guided visit and cannot re-enter the citadel.
Which Machu Picchu circuit will I get?
It depends on availability when the ticket is issued. Two listings give priority to Circuit 2, then 3 or 5, then 1; one assigns 2 or 3; one offers 1, 2 or 3. Our top pick walks the Circuit 1 upper path and then a guided Circuit 3 tour.
Is the Machu Picchu entrance ticket included?
It depends on the listing. On the $349 and $370 trips the operator issues the ticket; the $320 day books it with your passport copy; on the $308 day, entry depends on the option you choose. Three hikes do not name the ticket at all.
Can I climb Huayna Picchu on a Machu Picchu guided tour?
Not as part of the price. Three hikes mention Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain after the guided visit, only with a separate ticket booked in advance, three to six months ahead by one listing’s count.
Do I need my passport for Machu Picchu?
Yes. Four listings ask for passport details when you book, two ask you to carry it on the day, and the $320 day tour asks for ID with your ticket at the entrance.
